Is prepared food taxable in Washington State?
Washington law exempts most grocery type food from retail sales tax. However, the law does not exempt “prepared food,” “soft drinks,” or “dietary supplements.” Businesses that sell these “foods” must collect sales tax. In addition, all alcoholic items are subject to retail sales tax. What is a prepared food?

Are soft drinks taxable in Washington?
The Washington State Department of Revenue discusses the taxability of soft drinks and other beverages in a special notice, issued December 2, 2015. The notice explains which beverages are exempt from sales tax, which are subject to sales tax, alcoholic beverages, and food purchased with food stamps.

Which states tax presweetened coffee drinks?
Certain presweetened coffee drinks are also subject to special “soda taxes” in Boulder, Colorado, the state of Vermont, and several cities in California. Seattle, birthplace of the Frappuccino, will tax many presweetened beverages effective Jan. 1, 2018 ( Seattle Municipal Code, Chapter 5.53 ).
