What is a good thickness for a table top?
Transitional styles vary greatly, but typically favor table top thicknesses in the mid-range, from 1″ to 1 ¾”. Not excessively thick or thin, but well-proportioned to the interior space. Larger, more rustic pieces may work well with a thicker top. Country , Farmhouse , Tavern, and Arts & Crafts are considered transitional styles.

How much should a coffee table top overhang the frame?
This will make your coffee table unique and provide additional storage. If you prefer to skip this step, and attach the table top as-is, position the frame on the table top assembly. The top should overhang the frame by 1 3/8 inches on the front and back trims and two inches over the end trims.

· Well, my rule of thumb is that a rectangular coffee table should be from about 1/2 to 2/3 the length of the sofa. For an 84″ sofa, I usually do a coffee table of about 48″-50″ long and 24″-30″ deep. I’ve also done 42″ wide. And, also 54″ wide. All of them are fine. You can scale proportionately if you have a smaller or larger sofa.
· The important thing is the 3:1 ratio of dry wall or joint compound to paint. Keep in mind, by adding the joint compound (or spackle) it will lighten it by about 30%.
