Turns out the best time to drink coffee might not be first thing in the morning, but an hour after you wake up. This is because in the hour after you wake up, your body’s production of cortisol is at one of its three daily peaks, according to researchers who published a small but intriguing clinical study.
Because it takes caffeine about two hours to reach its peak in the body, a later cup of coffee allows the caffeine to be at full force when the body most needs it.
Because it takes caffeine about two hours to reach its peak in the body, a later cup of coffee allows the caffeine to be at full force when the body most needs it. Everyone experiences a natural dip in wakefulness during the later morning hours, says Dr. Joe Ojile, founder and CEO of Clayton Sleep Institute in St. Louis.
“Coffee naps” — drinking coffee before taking a 30-minute nap — helps some people feel even more alert afterward. That’s because people sleep during the time it takes the caffeine to kick in.
· Whenever I get exhausted enough to drink coffee in the afternoon (which somehow seems “wrong” to me), I inevitably end up lying down right after drinking it, while mentally berating myself for wasting coffee and ruining my nap (“you’ll never sleep now, you just drank coffee!”). But then I always wake up refreshed about 20 minutes later.
· Alcohol poisoning is a very different health event that requires rapid intervention. If you feel sick when you wake up in the morning after drinking the night before, you have a hangover. “Now the withdrawals are so terrible, it almost seems easier to pick up a drink than to face the awful anxiety and shakes. · A serious issue with my circadian rythm is that it works really well and I’m so used to wake up at a certain time in the morning that if I stay up late during weekends, for example until 4 a.m. on a saturday night, after 2 hours of sleep I wake up at my usual time (6) and so during weekends (mainly on sunday) I’m basically a tired zombie with …
