In a lab experiment, a group of German scientists found that a suitable concentration of coffee freshly made from roasted coffee beans inhibited the growth of two species of bacteria: Escherichia coli and Listeria innocua. When an enzyme called catalase was added to the coffee, its antibacterial ability was destroyed.
